The fire-through-cover/shit-that's-blocking ability is great when you've just made their group retreat to their healing truck behind that hedge or those trees. Anything more then that and you can start harassing their bases/trucks more aggressively. When you ca field over one ISU-152 you can be a little more aggressive. If you have good LOS then your ISU can be used to max effect rarely in those types of games you wouldn't be careful enough to not see it getting flanked somehow (read: you will be careful enough to see that it doesn't get flanked), so keeping it for longer range engagements is definitely a must.
In 1v1s and 2v2s I prefer the ISU because it's a little more offensively versatile (as you said it's good against emplacements, and of course OKW blobs).
